Three companies have combined to hold the first Australian seminar on pen-based computing for independent software vendors.
The companies will also run a Windows for Pen software development competition with a $10,000 development tool kit as the prize.
NCR, Microsoft and Co-Cam describe their joint effort as a marketing drive to promote pen-based computing _ the use of a pen, rather than keyboard or mouse, to enter data into, and to operate, personal computers.
The seminar will be held in Sydney on 2 September and in Melbourne the next day.
NCR, the computing arm of AT&T Company, will establish a mobile computing centre to provide demonstrations and briefings to software vendors, end users and other groups.
It will also start what it calls the pen solution partnership program for independent software vendors.
NCR is a leading supplier of pen computers, which are distributed by Melbourne-based Co-Cam Computer Group in Australia. NCR pen computers support Microsoft's Windows for Pen operating system.
Ms Magnolia Fung, NCR Australia's software alliance marketing manager, estimated up to 600 software vendors would develop applications for pen computers.
She said many applications already existed for pen-based computing systems, especially in the health, insurance and public utilities sectors.
